The Unfinished Experiment: America at 250

250 years ago, the United States was born as a "promissory note"—a bold claim that "all men are created equal" that, in reality, ignored millions. As 2026 unfolds, we’re launching our new series, America at 250, to explore the progress we’ve made and the risks we still face.
We’ve spent two centuries expanding the "consent of the governed," moving from power for the few to a more inclusive democracy. But history isn't a straight line. Today, the rise of "Unitary Executive" theories threatens to collapse the distance between a president and a king—the very thing the Founders sought to escape.
In just a few days, we will launch America at 250—a monthly series that offers historical insights and encourages actions that support democracy.
Remember: Democracy isn't a spectator sport.
Whether you’ve been consistently involved in civic activities or haven’t yet figured out how you, as just one person, can truly make a difference, if you believe in democracy, this series is your call to action. You’ll learn about the pendulum swings in our country’s history, and we’ll give you ideas on how to make a difference in small, medium, and large ways.
Throughout this new series, we’ll ask you to make your voice matter on Instagram, BlueSky, and LinkedIn using #HumansWrite250 and #UseYourVoice through simple, democratic tasks like contacting your representatives, asking questions, expressing your opinions, and sharing resources with your community.
The next 250 years start with us.
